What is this wine?
I Favati is a family estate in Irpinia, Campania, highly regarded for producing benchmark expressions of the region’s native grapes. Cretarossa is their Irpinia Campi Taurasini, made from 100% Aglianico grown on volcanic soils in the commune of Taurasi. Campi Taurasini is a DOC that allows for earlier release than Taurasi DOCG, but from the same noble grape and terroir. The 2017 vintage was warm and concentrated, yielding deeply flavored yet approachable reds.

Why get this wine?
This is a classic southern Italian red: powerful, structured, and authentic, yet more accessible than Taurasi. Cretarossa captures the essence of Aglianico’s dark fruit and volcanic minerality while offering excellent value and drinkability. For fans of Barolo or Cabernet Sauvignon looking to explore Italy’s south, this is a perfect entry point.

What does this wine taste like?
Blackberry, plum, and black cherry layered with tobacco, leather, and smoky volcanic notes. Full-bodied with firm but ripe tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Drinking beautifully now with a short decant, but will evolve through 2030. Ideal with slow-cooked meats, hearty pastas, or aged cheeses.

One of the wine world’s greatest paradoxes is the myriad stunning white wines that come from Italy’s south. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Campania, one of Italy’s warmest and sunniest regions, is only capable of big, rustic, and bold red wines from grapes like Aglianico.

Fiano di Avellina from I Favati, a high quality, family-owned winery, proves that southern Italy’s volcanic soils are capable of producing world-class white wines. Fiano is a temperamental grape to grow, notorious for very low yields. You’re not going to get rich growing Fiano, and for that reason, many old vines were ripped up in the 19th and 20th centuries, in favor of the higher-yielding Trebbiano or Sangiovese.

We’ve relied on traditionally-minded growers like I Favati to keep the magic alive. They make not one, but three Fiano wines.
