One of the wine world’s greatest paradoxes is the myriad stunning white wines that come from Italy’s south. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Campania, one of Italy’s warmest and sunniest regions, is only capable of big, rustic, and bold red wines from grapes like Aglianico.

Fiano di Avellina from I Favati, a high quality, family-owned winery, proves that southern Italy’s volcanic soils are capable of producing world-class white wines. Fiano is a temperamental grape to grow, notorious for very low yields. You’re not going to get rich growing Fiano, and for that reason, many old vines were ripped up in the 19th and 20th centuries, in favor of the higher-yielding Trebbiano or Sangiovese.
