The 17th Century Chateau named for this world-famous Chardonnay producing village has changed hands many times during its history. In 2001 the owners hired Etienne de Montille, son of famous Côte-de-Beaune wine maker Hubert Montille, to take over farming and production. He immediately instituted changes in the vineyards and cellar and began turning "good" wines in to great ones.

In 2012 Etienne and his sister Alix (a star winemaker too) purchased the property so it is now officially in the Montille Family of wines. It's a perfect marriage of an iconic estate to a renowned and highly pedigreed family domaine. Indeed the name "Montille" is itself an iconic brand in Burgundy now.

Why? What’s so great about the de Montille wines? Everything. Attention to every detail: in the farming, the winemaking, even the corks they use. They are biodynamic, which works particularly well in a clos with no neighbors to spray chemicals on nearby rows. They harvest by hand, age in a mix of woods, and manage to make all the tiny little choices that individually are hard to identify as so important but that, aggregated, are what make great wines great.

"From a 1.1ha holding in Pougets. Here too there is moderate oak influence surrounding the aromas of poached pear, white flowers, crushed fennel and a lovely spicy quality. There is outstanding volume and density to the markedly powerful mineral-driven flavors that deliver excellent persistence on the youthfully austere finale. Pougets generally gives a relatively elegant CC but this version is muscular and while not exactly robust, it isn't especially refined. Even so, I very much like this and in particular for its evident development potential."

"The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is located in the "Pougets" lieu-dit towards the top of the south/southeast facing part of the hill on red clay soils. The nose, more refined than its peers, offers lemon verbena mixed with chai tea and almonds. The palate is well-balanced with gentle grip and quite sapid in the mouth. It’s not a Corton-Charlemagne with huge matières, but it delivers in terms of tension and freshness on the finish. Excellent." -Neal Martin

"Deep and impenetrable on the nose. Lots of power and concentration. Floral and spice notes on the nose. Concentrated. Powerful weighty long-living grand cru. Needs a lot of time to really show its best."

"Despite its massive size and concentration, the Corton-Charlemagne from Domaine de Montille retains great elegance and finesse. There are ripe apple and quince aromas with hints of fresh white flowers, spice, and cream. The texture is dense and rich but the wine stays this side of heavy. We tasted a representative blend of several barrels; the grapes are slowly pressed and fermented with nearly all their lees in cask (35% new) to produce this intense white from the Corton Pougets lieu-dit."
