The 17th Century Chateau named for this world-famous Chardonnay producing village has changed hands many times during its history. In 2001 the owners hired Etienne de Montille, son of famous Côte-de-Beaune wine maker Hubert Montille, to take over farming and production. He immediately instituted changes in the vineyards and cellar and began turning "good" wines in to great ones.

In 2012 Etienne and his sister Alix (a star winemaker too) purchased the property so it is now officially in the Montille Family of wines. It's a perfect marriage of an iconic estate to a renowned and highly pedigreed family domaine. Indeed the name "Montille" is itself an iconic brand in Burgundy now.

Why? What’s so great about the de Montille wines? Everything. Attention to every detail: in the farming, the winemaking, even the corks they use. They are biodynamic, which works particularly well in a clos with no neighbors to spray chemicals on nearby rows. They harvest by hand, age in a mix of woods, and manage to make all the tiny little choices that individually are hard to identify as so important but that, aggregated, are what make great wines great.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

"Discreet wood influence sets off ripe and expressive aromas of petrol, acacia blossom and hazelnut. The bigger-bodied and more powerful medium weight flavors possess reasonably good mid-palate density while exhibiting a taut muscularity on the youthfully austere, firm and serious finale that also flirts with rusticity. This is classic Poruzots though one that should be approachable after only 5-ish years." -Allen Meadows

"The 2022 Meursault Les Porusots 1er Cru has a comparatively backward nose, pineapple mixed with citrus peel and just a touch of honeycomb. The palate is well-balanced with a defined, waxy-textured entry. With fine acidity, it’s a slightly smoky style of Meursault with a dab of spice towards the finish. Maybe it needs a little more nerve. Otherwise, this will be a fine Meursault that needs a bit more pizzazz. That might develop by the time it is in bottle." -Neal Martin

"Reductive smoky notes and salty minerality colour the bright aromas of grapefruit, greengage plum and passion fruit. Although the wine has lively acidity, there is enough density and length that it doesn't feel shrill. A bit forbidding now, this wine should start to open in three to five years and age well for a decade or more after that. The grapes come from the two domaine parcels (one in Dessus, one in Dessous), fermented and aged in large and small casks with a low proportion of new wood."
