What is this wine?
I Favati is a family-run estate in Irpinia, Campania, specializing in the region’s noble white grapes—Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina. Their Greco di Tufo Riserva Etichetta Bianca Terrantica is sourced from hillside vineyards in Tufo, planted on volcanic and sulfur-rich soils that give the wine its distinctive minerality. “Terrantica” is the estate’s flagship Greco, aged longer on the lees than the regular bottling to achieve added depth and texture. The 2022 vintage was warm yet balanced, producing expressive whites with excellent concentration.

Why get this wine?
This is one of the finest expressions of Greco di Tufo, a wine that combines southern Italian richness with mineral-driven elegance. The Riserva “Terrantica” stands apart for its intensity and aging potential, making it a superb value alternative to top white Burgundy for adventurous drinkers. For fans of distinctive Italian whites, this is a benchmark.

What does this wine taste like?
Ripe peach, citrus, and quince with notes of almond, smoke, and saline minerality. Full and textured on the palate, balanced by bright acidity and a long, savory finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Delicious now, but capable of aging 8–10 years, developing honeyed and nutty complexity. Excellent with shellfish, grilled fish, roasted chicken, or aged cheeses.

One of the wine world’s greatest paradoxes is the myriad stunning white wines that come from Italy’s south. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Campania, one of Italy’s warmest and sunniest regions, is only capable of big, rustic, and bold red wines from grapes like Aglianico.

Fiano di Avellina from I Favati, a high quality, family-owned winery, proves that southern Italy’s volcanic soils are capable of producing world-class white wines. Fiano is a temperamental grape to grow, notorious for very low yields. You’re not going to get rich growing Fiano, and for that reason, many old vines were ripped up in the 19th and 20th centuries, in favor of the higher-yielding Trebbiano or Sangiovese.

We’ve relied on traditionally-minded growers like I Favati to keep the magic alive. They make not one, but three Fiano wines.

"The 2022 Greco di Tufo Terrantica Etichetta Bianca Riserva pulls the taster close to the glass to take in its delicate floral perfumes, notes of sweet spice and white peach aromas. Luxuriously round, soothing and ripe in character, this displays silky textures—nearing glycerol in feel—with ripe orchard fruits underpinned by saline minerality. Deeply complex yet youthfully tense, the 2022 finishes long and lightly structured, with a sensation of liquid stone and sour citrus that lingers on. The future is very bright." -Eric Guido
