What is this wine?

Martine & Christian Rouchier are small, low-intervention vignerons based in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, at the northern end of the Ardèche, just outside the official boundaries of Saint-Joseph AOC. They began bottling under their own name in the early 2000s after years of selling grapes to the local co-op. Their vineyards are farmed organically, with no synthetic inputs, and the wines are made with native yeasts, no fining or filtering, and little to no sulfur.
The Vin de France “Puat” 2019 comes from a single parcel of Syrah on steep granitic slopes—essentially Saint-Joseph terroir, though labeled Vin de France because the vines lie just outside the appellation. Fermentation is done in whole clusters, and aging takes place in old barrels, producing a pure, savory, and deeply expressive Northern Rhône Syrah.

Why get this wine?

Rouchier’s wines have become cult favorites among natural-wine lovers and Rhône traditionalists alike for their combination of rustic authenticity and terroir precision. “Puat” is the domaine’s flagship bottling: wild, perfumed, and energetic, yet structured and ageworthy. The 2019 vintage shows exceptional balance, with ripe fruit tempered by granite-driven tension.

What does this wine taste like?

Deep and aromatic, with blackberry, violet, black olive, and cracked pepper. The palate is fresh and savory, with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a long, stony finish—classic Northern Rhône character with a natural touch.

When should you drink this wine?

Drink now after a short decant, or cellar through 2030. Pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, duck, or lentil dishes.

One of the most exciting and under the radar producers that we've recently discovered has to be the tiny domaine of Martine and Christian Rouchier. Farming 1.5 hectares in Ardeche (the heart of the St. Joseph appellation), the Rouchier's once only sold grapes to larger negociants, but that changed in 2010 when Martine decided she wanted to convert everything over to organic and biodynamic farming.

This process was completed in 2013, and we're shocked at the quality of their "start-up" wines. Moving beyond just organic and biodynamic in the vineyard, since 2015 all the wines are made completely naturally in the cellar as well with no added sulfur.

The result is what we want all our Syrah's to taste like. Complex and wild and meaty, but with a certain floral elegance and lift to it all. Think Herve Souhaut meets Jean Michel Stephan, with a purity of fruit and focus that is unique to Rouchier.
