The land that is now Snowden Vineyards was first planted to grapes (mostly zinfandel) back in the 1880’s. In 1955 the Snowden family purchased the land and since then they have returned much of the 160 acres to a forest preserve. But they continue to farm 23 acres of mostly Cabernet and Merlot with the utmost care and respect. This is true mountain fruit, located right at the border of the St. Helena and Rutherford AVA’s.

The wines are made by a 3rd generation Snowden, Diana, who also is intimately involved in the winemaking at her husband’s estate in Burgundy: Domaine Dujac. That’s right, Diana Snowden-Seysses is married to Jeremy Seysses and together they help produce some of the world’s most sought after Pinot Noir. Turns out they also make extremely good, and very classic, Napa Valley Cabernet and Merlot.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 91
"Snowden’s 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch blends in 24% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Scents of black cherries are joined by hints of vanilla, cedar and brown sugar on the nose, while the full-bodied palate shows a good bit more structure and tannin than the Merlot (as there should be), but the wine still retains a sense of elegance on the velvety, tea-tinged finish. Good value."

"Full bottle 1,310 g. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Matured seven months in French oak. Deep ruby with a wide meniscus. Sweet black and red fruit, vanilla-laced nose. A skosh of bitterness with ripe red fruit on the palate and balancing acid. Slightly warming mocha character to the finish. Pleasurable but for early drinking."

Decanter

D 93
"A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, sourced from vineyards at 180–245 metres (600–800 feet) in volcanic rhyolite soils and fermented with native yeast and aged just seven months in French oak before being bottled unfined. High-toned violets and sagebrush mingle with tobacco, while Bing cherry and plum fill the mid-palate with impressive density and weight. The Merlot adds fleshy, spiced plum fruit, complementing firm yet inviting tannins. The finish is long, marked by wet slate and mineral tension—a solid effort in a challenging vintage, offering good freshness and food-friendly balance."

Wine Spectator

WS 91
"Mulled plum and cherry fruitis slightly muted in energy but percolates steadily a long side dried anise and sassafras hints. A flash of red tea adds range on the finish, where a slightly toothy plum skin note hangs. Overall this is less overt than the typical ’22, with some stylish character."
