Stony Hill Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

$14999

Stony Hill's Cabernet comes from steep, north- and east-facing vineyard slopes on Spring Mountain at 400–1,500 feet elevation, where volcanic and sedimentary soils give the wine its distinctive mineral spine. Aged 18 months in largely neutral French oak, the wine echoes Napa Cabernets of decades past—refined, elegant, floral with violet and sandalwood framing ripe cherry and huckleberry. At just 14.1% alcohol, Cabernet as poetry, not power—built to improve for two decades.

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is an exquisite, nuanced wine. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, leather and orange peel are some of the main notes that grace this gracious, mid-weight Cabernet. Readers should expect an understated, perfumed Cabernet with lovely savory character and quiet, hushed fruit." —Antonio Galloni

"One of several stalwarts on Spring Mountain, Stony Hill has turned out a classic 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon. Scented of cassis, graphite, cherries and sage, it's firmly structured and medium-bodied, framed by ample (fruit) tannins that linger elegantly on the long finish. With a relatively small proportion of new oak and a restrained alcohol level (labeled at 13.8%), it hearkens back stylistically to Napa Valley Cabs from 40 years ago, without any of the rusticity those wines sometimes carried. It's a refined, elegant offering, one that should be cellared for at least several years and then drink well for two decades." —Joe Czerwinski

"Shows heavy sweet bay leaf and sassafras accents amid a core of gently mulled red currant, raspberry and red cherry fruit. Reveals pretty red tea accents and bright iron notes that run throughout, adding lovely cut, freshness and drive. A very typical Spring Mountain Cabernet. Drink now through 2035."

More about Stony Hill

California has its share of legends. Some of them, like Ridge or Phelps, are iconic. But others became legends by defying expectations, like Stony Hill.

When Fred and Eleanor McCrea founded it, back during WWII, it was one of only ten legal wineries in California. The McCrea's loved white Burgundy, so they planted Chardonnay (and some other random white grapes their advisors recommended for diversification). They use only very old oak barrels and avoid malolactic fermentation, so the wines are lean, bright, elegant: miles from the rich, buttery Chardonnay that became California's calling card.

They kept doing their thing over the decades, and new generations joined the family domaine. The wines were never typical but they always had a passionate cult following. And we've been lucky enough to have dinner with some of these passionate followers who shared bottles from the '70s and '80s. We can assure you this: the wines age.
