Vouette et Sorbee Champagne Blanc d'Argile NV

$12999

Bertrand Gautherot of Vouette et Sorbée is one of Champagne’s most compelling voices, crafting wines with a Burgundian sensibility from his biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Côte des Bar. Blanc d’Argile is his singular Blanc de Blancs, sourced entirely from Chardonnay vines rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone soils—similar to those found in Chablis. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, followed by aging in used oak barrels, allowing for a full, textured expression that balances power with finesse. Bottled without filtration and with only minimal sulfur, this wine is as pure and terroir-driven as Champagne gets.

Far from a typical Blanc de Blancs, Blanc d’Argile is vinous and deeply mineral, offering aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, and fresh herbs alongside a striking saline quality. The palate is layered and intense, with notes of lemon curd, crushed stones, and a hint of brioche, all carried by a firm, racy backbone. The lees aging in oak adds a whisper of richness without compromising the wine’s chiseled precision.

This Champagne has the depth to pair beautifully with complex dishes like Dover sole meunière, roasted cauliflower with hazelnuts, or a creamy risotto topped with aged Parmesan. A powerful yet precise expression of Chardonnay, it is one of the most thought-provoking Blanc de Blancs in the region.

"Vouette & Sorbée NV (2012) Extra-Brut Blanc d'Argile is superb. Deep, rich and powerful, the 2012 shows just how compelling Champagnes can be. A Champagne of baritone depth and intensity, the 2012 flows effortlessly throughout the mid-palate as the flavors and textures crescendo on the expressive finish. Readers who enjoy rich, vinous Champagnes will adore the 2012." —Vinous

"Gautherot’s (2010 vintage) NV Extra Brut Blanc d’Argile represents young Chardonnay vines (based on cuttings from Selosse and Dauvissat) in Kimmeridgian, and primary fermentation and malo took place in 400-liter barrels. While less multifaceted than the corresponding Pinot-based Fidele, this is only a little less unusual and intriguing. The nose was initially dominated by juniper and arbor vita, possibly prompted in large part by wood. Behind that, however, emerged bittersweet iris perfume, lemon zest, lemon pip, peanut, and eventually Chablis-like suggestions of herbed and salted chicken stock (here especially strong on celery leaf). Almost waxy in feel but with underlying firmness and lemon-tangerine brightness that help assuage its bitter elements, this finishes with impressive if slightly austere persistence. It should prove fascinating to follow for at least several years." —Robert Parker

More about Vouette et Sorbee

If you ever need to convince someone how different biodynamic farming is than conventional, you should take them to visit the Gautherots’ vineyards at Champagne Vouette et Sorbée.

Bertrand Gautherot is a great winemaker. But he is first and foremost a farmer. He keeps chickens and cows and not just to follow organic and biodynamic principles; he wants to minimize any inputs that don't come from the farm itself, because they could detract from the terroir.

You can see the rewards of Bertrand’s fanatical devotion in his soils and vines. Pick up a handful of his soil and it's dark, loosely packed, and full of life—it even smells alive. And his vines prosper: they're deeply colored and look strong.

But his neighbor’s vines, which get chemical sprays and fertilizers, grow in gray soils that are so hard-packed that you couldn't pick a handful up if you wanted to. There’s no life in them—nothing crawling in them because the pesticides kill everything indiscriminately. And the vines are tall, but listless. They both have the same incredible terroir. But only Bertrand grows vines that can dig deep and really express it.

Of course, Vouette & Sorbée wouldn't have become one of the most sought-after grower Champagnes if Bertrand didn't know what to do with the incredible fruit he grows. But he does, and the wines are amazing.
