This is a 1986 magnum of Special Selection, the Cabernet Caymus makes from the best barrels of its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Those barrels are set aside each year, and the wine is made in smaller quantities than the regular bottling. The fill sits at the base of the neck, which is what you hope to see on a bottle nearly four decades old. Caymus was only fourteen years old in 1986. Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Lorna and Charlie Sr., had opened the winery in 1972 with just 240 cases of Cabernet. The family still owns and runs Caymus, so this bottle comes from early in a story that's still going. If you only know modern Caymus, this is a rare chance to taste the flagship from its first chapter. As with any wine this age, no two bottles are quite the same. Stand it upright for a day before opening and decant it gently.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Tasting Profile

Expect the profile of mature, barrel-selected Napa Valley Cabernet: dried blackcurrant and plum giving way to cedar, tobacco, leather and earthy notes. Typically the tannins have softened into a silky, medium-to-full-bodied texture, with enough acidity to keep it fresh. It finishes dry and savoury, closer to an aged Bordeaux than a plush young Napa.
