A single-vineyard Sancerre from a lieu-dit almost nobody has heard of, and that's a big part of why it's worth finding. Sarrottes sits in Crézancy-en-Sancerre, the Sautereau family's home village, on Terres Blanches ("white earth"). That's Jurassic clay-limestone so full of fossilised shells and oysters that the ground looks white in the sun. The whole vineyard covers just 5 hectares, and the Sautereaus farm about a quarter of it. Those shell-rich soils give the estate's whites their aromatic punch, freshness and length, and the house winemaking is built to show them off. David Sautereau made his first harvest in 1997 after studying in Burgundy and Champagne and working in Switzerland, California and Australia. If you already like a good straight Sancerre, this is the next step: one small patch of ground, bottled on its own.

"The 2022 Le Vignoble des Sarrottes offers ripeness and richness, reflecting the generosity of the vintage. It is aromatically restrained in the context of Sauvignon Blanc, focusing more on its roundness and tender texture that's characteristic of this warm, dry vintage and clay-chalk soil. It retains a sense of freshness while remaining rather quiet. Subtle nectarine, orange peel, honey and creamy notes linger on the medium-length finish." —Rebecca Gibb MW

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Delicate white fish, raw or cooked: sea bass crudo, sole meunière, or halibut with beurre blanc. Also good with oysters on the half shell and the local Crottin de Chavignol goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc with extra aromatic lift from the shell-rich Terres Blanches soils: citrus, gooseberry and white flowers over a chalky, saline minerality. Typically medium-bodied with bright, mouthwatering acidity, it should finish dry, fresh and notably long. Think of it as a more focused, more aromatic step up from an everyday Sancerre.
