A vintage grower Champagne built mostly on Meunier, Champagne's perennial understudy and the grape Lelarge-Pugeot has made its cause. Les Vignes de Gueux comes from two parcels in Gueux, a village just 2 km north of the family's Premier Cru home of Vrigny on the Montagne de Reims. One is Le Linguet, a southeast-facing plot of Pinot Noir on sand. The other is Le Patenais, which faces east and holds Meunier (plus four rows of Chardonnay) on sandy loam and clay. The 2016 was fermented with native yeasts, kept low in sulfur and finished at just 2 g/L dosage, so you taste the fruit and the place, not sugar. The Lelarges have tended vines in Vrigny since 1799, and today the estate is certified organic and Demeter biodynamic, using cover crops, composts, teas and a horse for the plowing. We've raved about these Champagnes for years, and this is the bottle to grab if you want to see what Meunier can do from a single vintage and a single village.

More about Lelarge Pugeot

Recently the San Francisco Chronicle's Esther Mobley called our SF-based colleague, Josh Shapiro, to pick his brain about the Champagnes of Lelarge-Pugeot, a darling of the grower movement. He had a lot to say!

They are organically-farmed grower Champagnes of the first order, made with a light touch in the cellar and offering delicious purity and fantastic terroir expression. This is the kind of Champagne we love to drink and to share, and Flatiron employees — both here in NYC and in California — have been raving about these wines for some time now.

We even hosted Clémence Lelarge at our San Franscisco wine bar, and turnout was incredible. So we had mixed feelings when we saw Esther Mobley’s feature on Clémence and her Champagnes. On the one hand we were thrilled to see the wines get the sort of treatment they so richly deserve (and it was nice to see Josh quoted in print!). Everyone who is interested should have the pleasure of tasting these wines.

On the other hand, well, we know what this publicity means: the wines will find new fans, sell out, and become harder to source in the future.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Gougères or warm Comté puffs; oysters on the half shell; buttermilk fried chicken; roast chicken with mushrooms; wild mushroom tart; salmon rillettes on toast.

Tasting Profile

Expect a bone-dry, low-dosage grower Champagne in the Montagne de Reims style: red apple, pear and citrus with a touch of red-berry fruit, plus toasty, brioche notes from time on the lees. The bubbles are fine and the acidity lively, and with almost no sugar the finish runs taut, savoury and long. Think a more vinous, less polished take on a big-house Brut.
