A light-bodied, dry Mencía from Ribeira Sacra, and a good argument for Galicia, in Spain's green northwest, as one of the country's most rewarding places to drink from right now. Abadía da Cova is a fourth-generation family estate in the village of A Cova, on the banks of the Miño River. Siblings Paloma and Adrián Rodríguez Moure run it with their cousin José Moure, and Adrián handles both the vines and the cellar. The name comes from one of Ribeira Sacra's old monasteries, the abbey where the family's great-grandmother was born. You'll still see the family winery's own name, Adegas Moure, on the label. The family has also spent three decades nudging a small circle of local growers toward organic, sustainable farming, which is slow, unglamorous work, and we respect it. Cepa Vella is their easygoing, all-Mencía red and an easy first bottle from an appellation that rewards exploring.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pulpo a la gallega with smoked paprika and olive oil; empanada gallega filled with tuna or pork; grilled chorizo and pimientos de Padrón; roast chicken with garlic and thyme; mushroom and white bean stew.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Ribeira Sacra Mencía profile: red cherry, raspberry and a touch of violet, with a peppery, herbal edge and a stony, mineral note. Light-bodied, with fresh, lively acidity and soft, fine tannins, it typically finishes dry, juicy and clean. Think a slightly more savoury Beaujolais.
