Antonio Galloni

90 points

"Sweet dried cherry, rose petals, candied cherry, cinnamon and dried flowers all grace this decidedly understated, mid-weight 2020 Barbaresco from Ovello. Pretty floral and savory notes typical of this site open nicely with aeration." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

94 points

"From the sloping vineyard site just below the Cantina del Pino winery, the 2020 Barbaresco Ovello always holds special significance in the hearts and minds of those who collect and drink these wines. Always reflective of the house style, the wine is open-knit and delicate on the senses, folding over the palate with delicate notes of wild berry fruit, blue flower and light touches of smoke or campfire." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Barbaresco. Just mid ruby. Fragrant raspberry fruit with hints of liquorice. Still a little backward on the palate but with fresh acidity and gorgeous, finely chiselled, long tannins. Great length and focus on the finish."

Wine Enthusiast

92 points

"Imagine plucking strawberries and raspberries straight from the bush, their freshness and tartness filling the air. Accompanying this fruit-forward bouquet are hints of wild herbs, evoking a walk through a forest, with touches of pine in the breeze. The palate is a nod to the classics, with those tart wild berries taking center stage. The fine tannins are like a gentle reminder that this wine is meant for pairing—think a rustic mushroom risotto or a herb-crusted rack of lamb."

Kerin O'Keefe

94 points

"Spicy and elegant, the 2020 Ovello from Cantina del Pino opens with heady scents of ground clove, nutmeg, dog rose, camphor and wild berry. All about finesse, the graceful, full-bodied palate offers juicy pomegranate, red cherry, star anise and bitter orange alongside taut, polished tannins. Such a beautiful wine." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Cantina del Pino

Renato Vacca was born and raised in Barbaresco. His family’s history there goes back generations. The estate was originally purchased by Renato's great-grandfather in the 1920’s from the son of Domizio Cavazza, the father of Barbaresco. For most of its history the family estate sold the majority of their grapes to Produttori del Barbaresco, the local cooperative where Renato's father, Adriano was a founding member. In 1987, Renato convinced his father to start producing their own wines.

All that personal and generational knowledge made Renato one of the most experienced growers in Barbaresco and he knew its sites and soils intimately. Vineyards at Cantina del Pino are lovingly tended to without the use of harsh chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. In the winery, Renato guided his wines with a soft touch and while a traditionalist in many respects he was not afraid to put his own stamp, such as the inclusion of a small percentage of whole clusters. The wines are powerful and intense yet elegant and supremely refined.

Renato’s wife Franca and his father Adriano, who still directs viticulture at the estate, along with his cousin Aldo Vacca at Produttori are now continuing the work that Renato began.
