Castello di Neive Barbaresco 2021

$4599

Pure Nebbiolo aged with intention in wooden vats for two years, crafted from some of Barbaresco's most prestigious vineyard sites. Gallina, Messoirano, Valtorta, and Santo Stefano contribute their finest expressions to this benchmark wine from vines averaging 30 years of age. The result shows Nebbiolo's signature elegance—silky tannins and a hypnotic balance between power and grace that rewards contemplation and, ultimately, patience.

"The 2021 Barbaresco is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Castello di Neive. Floral, lifted and gracious, the 2021 is a real charmer. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint, spice, licorice and orange peel all grace this understated, classy Barbaresco." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A well-delineated red, bursting with energy, along with aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, rose, tar, licorice and sweet spices. Dense and vibrant, with a long aftertaste echoing the spice notes. Best from 2026 through 2042.." —Bruce Sanderson

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"As the wine opens, it reveals a garden full of ripe raspberries, rosebuds, thyme and dried leaves. The elegance of this wine cannot be overstated. A finesse that showcases the beauty of this vintage. A bowl of cherries sits on the palate as fine and elegant tannins prop up the fruits and allow a mineral edge to glide in as vibrant acidity keeps everything bright and fresh. Drink now–2040." —Jeff Porter

"Spicy aromas of peppercorn mingle with violet, red woodland berry and eucalyptus on the stunning 2021 Barbaresco from Castello di Neive. Full-bodied and loaded with finesse, the elegant, structured palate delivers succulent Morello cherry, star anise and white pepper set against a backbone of velvety tannins that provides polished support. Fresh acidity keeps it bright and balanced. Drink 2027–2036." —Kerin O’Keefe

More about Castello di Neive

The Castello is most known for its purchase, in the early 1960s, of a hillside known as Santo Stefano. Only 20% of it was planted to vines at the time, but the Castello recognized its great potential and planted the entire hillside. The Castello has since supplied Bruno Giacosa (a Neive native) with the grapes for his monumental Santo Stefano, the one wine that Giacosa makes from purchased fruit.

The Castello also makes its own version of Santo Stefano (a serious wine, indeed), but also uses it as a source for today’s Barbaresco: a blend of different Crus intended to highlight the terroir of Neive in general. Neive is a little sandier than the village of Barbaresco, making wines that are less tannic. This, of course, helps make the wine more approachable, and so it is precisely the kind of Barbaresco that the Piedmontese gulp so happily when released.
