David Duband has been slowly and methodically gaining steam as a top winemaker in Burgundy. He’s more of a long distance runner than a sprinter, and he’s now really hitting his stride. David took over the winemaking for his family's domaine in 1991, at the ripe age of 20. He had grown up in the Haut Cotes-de-Nuits where his father cultivated vines and sold fruit and wine to various negociants.
Over the years the family has added more vineyards and David has partnered with François Feuillet, who purchased more 1er and Grand cru vineyards including the former holdings of Jacky Truchot. Along the way David converted all the vineyards he and Francois own to organic viticulture, and in 2008 he began to make wine with a higher concentration of whole clusters, inspired by the wines of Dujac and DRC.
Success for Duband certainly didn't happen overnight, but with almost 30 years of experience now he’s finally getting the attention he deserves. But he remains a humble and hardworking vigneron, very much a product of the “back woods” where he grew up. And it is there, on the higher plateaus and hills above the Cote de Nuits, that he still makes some excellent, value driven wines.
