Müller-Thurgau rarely gets taken this seriously. This one grows at about 1,000 meters on the Fennberg plateau above Margreid, in Südtirol (Italy's German-speaking far north), and Tiefenbrunner calls it the highest Müller-Thurgau vineyard in Europe. Herbert Tiefenbrunner, who had run the family cellar since he was 15, planted the single hectare in 1972 on a south-facing shelf where the Rotwand ridge blocks the north wind. The wine is named for Franz Philipp Freiherr von Fenner zu Fennberg, who founded the Austrian Kaiserjäger (the emperor's soldiers) and spent his summers at the plateau's Hofstatt farm. For 2022 the grapes sat on their skins for six hours before a cool fermentation in stainless steel. The wine then aged eight months in steel and in large French oak casks between one and forty years old, and spent another ten months in bottle before release. That's a lot of patience for a grape that usually gets bottled young and forgotten, and the result is a dry, brisk mountain white with far more to it than the name Müller-Thurgau leads people to expect.

"The 2022 Müller-Thurgau Vigna Feldmarschall Von Fenner blossoms in the glass with a perfumed mix of young kiwis, lime zest, tropical florals and wet slate. This is beautifully balanced, ripe yet also savory, as notes of apple and pear contrast a stern core of minerals, all motivated by tantalizing acidity. It is nearly chewy through the salty finish, structured and persistent, with a minty resonance that lingers." —Eric Guido

"The Tiefenbrunner 2022 Alto Adige Müller Thurgau Feldmarschall Von Fenner shows a light golden hue and additional fruit weight from a hot and dry vintage. Those pretty notes of reduction that usually define the bouquet are played down in the case of this bottling. The aromas recall tangerine skin and lemon rind, and there are candied aromas as well. The wine shows a moment of leanness on the mid-palate, followed by thickness, with ripe apples and orchard fruit. This accessible vintage is less brilliant and contoured compared to recent past editions. Production is 14,000 bottles." —Monica Larner

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Vietnamese summer rolls with herbs and nuoc cham; pan-fried trout with brown butter and almonds; Thai green papaya salad; speck and alpine cheese boards; chicken schnitzel with lemon; steamed mussels with white wine and shallots.

Tasting Profile

Expect a fragrant, high-mountain take on Müller-Thurgau: green apple, white peach and citrus with elderflower, nutmeg and alpine herbs. Large old casks typically add a little texture without obvious oak flavour, while bright, brisk acidity keeps it light to medium-bodied and lifted. Think of a dry Riesling with a touch of Muscat-like perfume, finishing dry, clean and mineral.
