Litaud is in the Mâconnais. And as Lettie Teague just wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “Smart sommeliers are keeping an eye on the Mâconnais. A new generation of winemakers down south is providing excellent wines for a fraction of what you'd pay elsewhere in Burgundy.”
And it's not just somms! We've been big on the Mâcon for years, and in that time no one has offered better wine at this price than Litaud’s Saint-Véran.
Litaud is a very small producer working with many ancient vines—like 100-year-old ancient—planted in limestone-rich soils layered with fossils (yes, including woolly mammoths).
Jean-Jacques Litaud uses a light touch in the winery. He is not trying to make blockbusters, and there is no new oak used on the Saint-Véran. It's pure and delicious, about halfway between simple and complex.
