Bérêche's Brut Réserve is the way into one of Champagne's most talked-about grower estates, and in a 3-litre bottle it turns into serious grower Champagne made for a big table. This release is built on the 2022 base: 30% Chardonnay from Ludes, 35% Pinot Noir from Ormes and 35% Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne, with 30% reserve wines in the blend. Sixty percent of it ages in wood, and none of it goes through malolactic fermentation. That choice keeps the house style taut rather than broad. All of the fruit comes from the family's own biodynamically farmed vines, which average more than 38 years old. They grow in the home village of Ludes on the chalky Montagne de Reims, in Ormes on the Petite Montagne de Reims and in Mareuil-le-Port in the western Vallée de la Marne. Jean-Pierre Bérêche was one of the first growers to build a reputation of his own, and his sons Raphaël and Vincent have built on it. It's precision and pleasure, and pouring it for a crowd is about the most generous thing you can do with it.

"Bérèche's NV (2009) Extra Brut Reserve fleshes out beautifully in the glass. Today, the 2009 is more about textural depth and volume, while the aromatics are less expressive. Still, this is classic Bérèche in its feel and style. Layers of rich, generous 2009 fruit wrap around the finish. The extra year of aging in bottle has given the Extra Brut Reserve gorgeous contours. The Extra Brut Reserve is the same blend as the NV Brut Reserve, with one more year on the lees, and 30% reserve wines. Dosage was 2 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

"Anchored in the 2023 vintage and disgorged in January 2026 with a dosage of 4.4 grams per liter, the NV Brut Réserve offers aromas of peach, yellow apple and lemon confit mingled with notes of freshly baked bread. Medium- to full-bodied, ample and pillowy, it is built around a generous core of fruit, with a textural attack and ripe yet racy acidity, concluding with a long, chalky finish. A touch more demonstrative and broad-shouldered than the 2022-based rendition, it nevertheless remains a superb introduction to the Bérêche style and can be purchased by the case. While already approachable, it will improve with additional time on cork. Produced in quantities of approximately 100,000 bottles a year, it remains one of Champagne's most reliable entry-level cuvées." —Kristaps Karklins

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters on the half shell, gravlax with dill and mustard sauce, a big platter of fried chicken, warm gougères, or aged Comté passed around as an aperitif.

Tasting Profile

Expect a taut, precise grower Champagne: crisp apple, citrus and red-berry notes from the three-grape blend, with a touch of brioche and some subtle nutty depth from partial ageing in wood. Skipping malolactic fermentation keeps the acidity bright. Expect a fine mousse and a medium-bodied palate that finishes dry, chalky and clean.
