Twenty years on, and in magnum: this is the flagship Riserva from Valtellina's cult Nebbiolo house, the kind of bottle you open for a table that knows what it's getting. Arturo Pelizzatti Perego created Rocce Rosse in 1984 in the heart of the Sassella cru. He renewed a vineyard he'd inherited from his father to make a wine he believed only Nebbiolo of the Alps could make, using the grape the locals call Chiavennasca. (Ar.Pe.Pe. is simply his initials, and the fifth generation of the family runs the estate today.) The vines sit at 400 to 500 meters on south- and southeast-facing slopes between the Orobic and Rhaetian Alps, just south of the Swiss border. The family describes the wine as a root pushing into granite while the breva, the breeze off Lake Como, cools the valley. That's the case for Alpine Nebbiolo: more mineral and vertical than anything from the Langhe, built on tension rather than weight. A big bottle ages more slowly, which makes this 2005 magnum one of the best ways to see where these wines end up.

"The 2005 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Rocce Rosse is a classic Ar.Pe.Pe. wine that shows elements of maturity while also retaining a good bit of freshness, all int eh airy, weightless style that is so typical here. Orange peel, rose petal and smoke are some of the many nuances that waft from the glass as this gracious, ethereal Valtellina Nebbiolo shows off its pedigree." —Antonio Galloni

"100% Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo). Palish ruby with orange tinges. Subtle spice nose with hints of rose petal, mulch and cherry. Same subtle notes on the palate. Great length and freshness. Proper depth and yet light with super-fine tannins. Unique and fine and with lots of potential."

More about Ar.Pe.Pe.

ARPEPE is short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, the founder of the estate. Sadly Arturo passed 15 years ago, but his children have continued the work he started. Emanuele and Isabella have expanded the winery and this allows them the luxury of patience. They can age the wines for years in tanks, concrete vats and large neutral oak barrels until they are ready to bottle, and they can age them even longer in bottle until they are ready to sell and drink.

The vineyard work is laborious and almost entirely by hand due to the steepness of the slope. They eschew the use of herbicides and pesticides and essentially farm the same way as their ancestors did.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pizzoccheri (Valtellina buckwheat pasta with cabbage, potato and Casera cheese); beef braised in Nebbiolo; roast venison or hare; porcini risotto; aged Bitto cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alpine Nebbiolo profile: red cherry, wild strawberry, violets and dried herbs over a stony, mineral core, with mature Riserva bottlings typically adding tea leaf, leather and forest floor. Think of a more vertical, mountain-cooled Barolo. It's full yet lifted, with fine, firm tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury finish.
