Valtellina is famous for reds made from grapes dried in a loft, and Ar.Pe.Pe. refuses to do it. Ultimi Raggi is their alternative. Arturo Pelizzatti Perego came up with the wine. The Nebbiolo (called Chiavennasca here) grows at 550 to 600 metres, at the very top of the Sassella cru in a spot called Ere. It's left to overripen slightly on the vine and dry slowly in the wind as the plant gets ready for winter. Picking comes just before the snow, between mid and late November, and the wine is fermented completely dry. The acidity stays prominent, even though this ends up as the highest-alcohol wine in the house lineup. All that extra hang time softens Nebbiolo's nervy tannin without making it heavy, which is the whole point. A 2007 in magnum gives you a rare look at what this cult house's oddest cuvée turns into after years of slow aging. Open it for a table of Nebbiolo lovers and let it breathe in the glass.

"The 2009 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Ultimi Raggi is beguiling, rich, dense and powerful. Cinnamon, dried dark cherry, leather, smoke and licorice come together in a full-bodied, somewhat rustic wine with no shortage of character. The Ultimi Raggi is made from the last fruit on the vine to ripen, and is therefore sweeter and richer through the mid-palate, with more palate weight and overall density than is found in most of these wines. I loved it." —Antonio Galloni

"Ultimi Raggi means "last rays" in Italian, and it's impossible not to think of the pink and gold colors that illuminate the last tips of the Italian Alps as the setting sun makes its final descent of the day. The 2009 Valtellina Superiore Riserva Sassella Ultimi Raggi expresses that terrestrial poetry with dark fruit intensity. Of the various samples tasted from Ar.Pe.Pe., this wine is the most open, immediate and generous. It reveals a slightly darker appearance and rounder fruit flavors of cherry and dried blackberry. This is the most primary of the wines in this fight. This single-vineyard expression is only made in the best years. Only 6,000 bottles were produced. The wine ferments on the skins for 30 days in oak, and it then ages in a combination of chestnut wood (for five years) and cement (for an additional three years)." —Robert Parker

"You'll find aromas of ripe berry, exotic spice, scorched earth, violet and balsamic notes on this generous fragrant red. The structured savory palate delivers crushed raspberry, succulent red cherry, star anise and tobacco alongside decisive but refined tannins. It's balanced, with fresh acidity." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Ar.Pe.Pe.

ARPEPE is short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, the founder of the estate. Sadly Arturo passed 15 years ago, but his children have continued the work he started. Emanuele and Isabella have expanded the winery and this allows them the luxury of patience. They can age the wines for years in tanks, concrete vats and large neutral oak barrels until they are ready to bottle, and they can age them even longer in bottle until they are ready to sell and drink.

The vineyard work is laborious and almost entirely by hand due to the steepness of the slope. They eschew the use of herbicides and pesticides and essentially farm the same way as their ancestors did.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta with cabbage, potato and Valtellina Casera), polenta taragna with braised venison, beef brasato, and aged Bitto cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect a riper, fuller take on Alpine Nebbiolo: dark cherry, dried flowers, orange peel and a stony, mineral edge on the nose. The palate is typically full-bodied yet fresh, with prominent acidity and tannins softened by long hang time and large-cask ageing, finishing dry, long and savoury. Think of a finer-boned Barolo with mountain freshness.
