2003 was a scorching year in Bordeaux, and this Angelus shows how a great Saint-Émilion estate handled the heat. It's an even split of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which is a lot of Cabernet Franc for the Right Bank, and the estate credits the Cabernet Franc with keeping the palate fresh. The family's own nickname for the vintage is "L'Oriental." After the hot, sunny summer, the grapes came in exceptionally rich and well balanced, with no disease at all. Harvest ran from 9 September to 3 October. Angelus sits on the south-facing foot of the slope, less than a kilometre from Saint-Émilion's bell tower. The name comes from a small walled plot called l'Angelus that Maurice de Boüard de Laforest added in 1920. The estate's drinking window for the 2003 runs from 2020 to 2035, so this mature bottle is ready to open now and still has years ahead of it.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saint-Émilion profile of a Merlot–Cabernet Franc blend: plum, black cherry and cassis from the Merlot, lifted by the Cabernet Franc's graphite, tobacco and herbal freshness. Typically full-bodied and polished, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and a long, savoury finish; with bottle age, expect leather, cedar and earthy notes to emerge.
