Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello emerges from the oldest vines, planted about 55 years ago. It is also one of the very finest wines I have tasted at Monteraponi. Deep and beautifully layered, the 2020 offers up an exotic mélange of dark fruit mixed with hints of lavender, spice and sage. Time in the glass brings out the wine's striking inner sweetness and perfume. This vivid, explosive Riserva is endowed with tremendous depth and explosive energy. The 2020 spent 24 months in cask." —Antonio Galloni

"Packaged in a bottle with a black label, the organic Monteraponi 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello is Sangiovese with smaller parts Canaiolo and Colorino. The vines are older for this wine, reaching 55 years of age, and the soils at Il Campitello site offer an even mix of limestone alberese and schist-clay galestro. These conditions naturally set this wine up for both elegance and structural power, and this warm vintage delivers on both, with perhaps more emphasis on the power. It's a lovely wine from one of the best estates in the appellation." —Monica Larner

"At 420 metres, Il Campitello is one of Monteraponi’s lower sites. The 55-year-old plantings on Galestro-rich clay face southwest, giving grapes with structure suitable for a Riserva. That said, do not expect a robust, brawny wine – this is elegant, midweight and chiselled, with sinewy muscle. It leads with scents of broom and citrus blossom before an earthy timbre of liquorice root and forest shrub takes over. Juicy and vibrant, the palate is replete with tasty raspberries and flows effortlessly with understated concentration, scintillating acidity and mouth-cleansing tannins." —Michaela Morris

"The 2020 Monteraponi 2020 Campitello Riserva is stellar. A blend of 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo, 3% Colorino – all organically farmed – it has a heady nose recalling ripe berry, forest floor, grilled herb and eucalyptus. On the elegant, structured palate, firm tannins and vibrant acidity underpin juicy red cherry, raspberry, blood orange and hazelnut before a saline close gives it an almost salty finish. Made the firm’s oldest vines planted in the 1950s, it combines concentration, strength and finesse. Just gorgeous." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Monteraponi

Monteraponi is a medieval hamlet just outside Radda in Chianti, built around three towers dating to the 10th century. Michele Braganti's family has owned it since the early 1970s, and Michele revived the winery in the early 2000s, convinced Radda could produce world-class Sangiovese. Of the estate's roughly 200 hectares, 12 are vines and 8 olives, set in a south-facing natural amphitheater sheltered from the north wind, with the rest left to oak and chestnut woods. Proof the Classico zone still has surprises.
