There are winds of change blowing in Chianti Classico: rather than masking the vibrancy and purity of Sangiovese with heavy French oak (or worse, with the addition of French varietals), many winemakers have chosen to wholly embrace this noble grape. Few estates can claim responsibility for this renaissance more than Fontodi, a bastion of organic farming and a champion of Sangiovese’s role as the grape of Chianti.

There is plenty of Panzano intensity, but less opulence than has been the norm in the past. A shift towards larger format oak and bottling four months earlier contribute to that feel. Dark red cherry, leather, spice, rose petal, dried herbs and wild flowers all grace this nuanced Chianti Classico. It will be interesting to see the direction this bottling takes. The youthful juiciness has the energy to carry this over the next eight or so years. It finishes with its signature bitter liquorice twist."
