Barolo's grape, Barolo's family, Barolo's cellar -- without Barolo's waiting period. Davide Rosso draws this Langhe Nebbiolo from an older Serralunga parcel, ferments it slowly in concrete with native yeasts, and ages it in 50-hectoliter French oak casks so the fruit stays out front instead of getting buried under wood. Freed from the three-year aging requirement that governs Barolo, it arrives young and open, with Nebbiolo's unmistakable signature -- rose petal, tart red cherry, a fine dusting of tannin -- in a frame light enough for a weeknight. It isn't trying to be Barolo, and that honesty is the point. One of the most reliable ways to learn what this grape actually tastes like.

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Focused and vibrant, this red reveals macerated cherry, raspberry, rose hip and mineral aro- mas and flavors. Shows intensity midpalate, and the finish extends nicely."

Wine Enthusiast

93 points

"Delicate rose petals and wild berries float above warm earth notes, while threads of dried herbs weave through the background. A bright core of strawberry and sour cherry delivers a perfect 10 performance, balancing the warm vintage's plumpness with the kind of poise and precision that would make an Olympic gymnast jealous." —Jeff Porter

Kerin O'Keefe

92 points

"An exceptionally pretty young red, the Giovanni 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo entices with heady scents of rose, violet, ripe forest berry and a whiff of menthol. Aged for several months in large French oak casks, the accessible, delicious palate offers succulent Morello cherry, bitter orange and star anise cushioned in lithe tannins. Chill it for a perfect summer red. Drink through 2028." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giovanni Rosso

The Rosso family of Serralunga d'Alba long sold their grapes to others. Giovanni Rosso restructured the vineyards in the 1980s, and his son Davide, a skilled winemaker, took the final step to an estate label, starting with a Barolo from Cerretta in 1995. Serra followed, and today Davide also owns vines in Vigna Rionda, one of Serralunga's most storied sites, bottled under the Ester Canale name. Serious, structured, classic Serralunga Barolo from a family that knows its hillsides intimately.
