What is this wine?
Luddite is a boutique winery in Bot River, South Africa, founded in 1999 by Niels and Penny Verburg. Known first for their bold Shiraz, the estate also produces the Saboteur range—wines made to be expressive, generous, and approachable. The Saboteur Red 2021 is a blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with proportions changing slightly each year. It is fermented naturally and aged mostly in large, old oak, emphasizing fruit purity and texture. The 2021 vintage was cool and even, yielding balanced, aromatic reds with excellent structure.
Why get this wine?
This blend captures the heart of modern South African reds: ripe yet fresh, serious but unpretentious. Luddite’s Saboteur Red consistently delivers richness and drinkability at an excellent price, making it a great alternative to Rhône blends or modern Bordeaux-style wines. A perfect bottle for both casual enjoyment and pairing with hearty meals.
