One Grand Cru parcel, one year and roughly eight to nine years on its lees before disgorgement. This is Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Chardonnay with nothing to hide behind. Les Coullemets is one of the village's most prized lieux-dits. It's also one of three wines in Guy Charlemagne's Mesnillésimes series, where each bottling shows a single Mesnil site from a single vintage (the other two are Les Vieilles Vignes and Les Chétillons). The family has grown and bottled its own wine here since 1892. The domaine sits at the top of the village, facing Salon and a few steps from Krug's Clos du Mesnil, which is very grand company for a grower. Sisters Justine and Marie Charlemagne now make the wines. They harvest by hand from old vines planted by massal selection (the estate average is 58 years) and ferment this cuvée in tank, keeping oak out of the way so Mesnil's minerality and verticality come through. The Extra Brut dosage means very little sugar gets between you and the site. If you love the idea of top-name Mesnil but want it from the people who farm the vines, this is your bottle.

"The 2016 Blanc de Blancs Les Coullemets is laced with hints of lemon oil, chalk, mint and dried flowers. Light on its feet and vibrant, the Coullemets is a classic Champagne from Mesnil. Bracing saline notes support the mid-palate and finish. Dosage is 4 grams per liter." —Antonio Galloni

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Briny oysters on the half shell; langoustine or scallop crudo with citrus; sole meunière; Comté gougères; sushi and sashimi, especially fatty white fish and uni.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers over a chalky, saline minerality, with long ageing on the lees adding notes of brioche and toasted hazelnut. Tank fermentation and the Extra Brut dosage keep it taut and racy, with high acidity, a fine, creamy mousse and a long, very dry, mineral finish.
