Pio Cesare Dolcetto d'Alba 2021

Pio Cesare has been a fixture of Alba since 1881 — one of the founding traditional houses of the Langhe, now in its fifth generation. The Barolos and Barberescos get the headlines, but Dolcetto is the grape Piedmontese growers drink themselves: a juicy, savory, distinctly local red built for the table. This one shows exactly what it should — fresh dark fruit, a brisk savory edge, soft tannins, the easy weight that makes a bottle disappear over dinner. The classic Piedmontese aperitivo-and-pasta red, from a house that knows the region as well as anyone.

More about Pio Cesare

A Piedmont institution since 1881, when Alba businessman Pio Cesare started making wine in the same cellar the family still uses. After the death of Pio Boffa in 2021, the fifth generation, Federica Boffa and her cousin Cesare Benvenuto, took the reins. The family owns 75 hectares across Barolo and Barbaresco, and the wines age mostly in large neutral oak casks, with a touch of small barrels for some top bottlings. Classic Langhe, in the best way.
