Jane et Sylvain is a tiny winery based in and around the prestigious Cote-de-Nuits village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Named after its charming owners, the estate is a rather modest and unpretentious affair, a departure from their posh neighbors. The resulting wine is unadorned and pure, a beautiful expression of this exalted terroir.
Jane & Sylvain Raphanaud brought their domaine to life in 1993, with 1.5 hectares of Gevrey-Chambertin from Jane’s family, though the first vintage with the Jane et Sylvain label was 1999. Today the domain covers a minuscule 4.5 hectares of organically certified vineyards. True vignerons, they spend most of their time tending to their 20-30 year old vines. It’s all manual work, ploughing in the vines and using mainly biodynamic treatments. Only in the most trying vintage will they apply copper or sulfur in the vineyards.
The wines are made with minimal intervention in the cellar; using native yeasts and old barriques, with varying extraction and maceration according to what each vintage brings. This commitment to a natural approach, along with the hallowed ground beneath them are the secret to these beautiful and delicious wines.
In most years the couple produce both village and 1er cru wines but the Raphanaud’s have started to wind down their operations. With no heir to take over the winery they have decided to go back to their roots as growers only. While their beautiful fruit will end up in some very good and certainly more expensive bottles, their unique and charming wine will be no more.
