Château Fonplégade's neighbours include Angélus and Canon La Gaffelière, and that's about as good an address as Right Bank Merlot gets. The vineyard sits on the southwest side of Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux's hilltop Right Bank village, and runs from the limestone plateau down onto clay-limestone slopes. The 2014 is a Grand Cru Classé of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Denise and Stephen Adams bought the estate in 2004 and have since moved it to organic farming (it was in conversion with Ecocert in 2014). They also brought in hand-picking and three rounds of sorting, and Denise describes the approach as farming vine by vine. This vintage spent 19 months mostly in new and once-used French oak, with 15% in concrete, and Michel Rolland consulted. If you want classified Saint-Emilion from serious limestone without paying for the famous labels next door, this is a smart bottle to know.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic; entrecôte bordelaise with shallot and red wine sauce; duck breast with a blackcurrant or cherry reduction; wild mushroom and thyme risotto; aged Comté or Tomme de Savoie.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby with purple glints. Aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, cocoa and fresh tobacco. Full, round body that still feels fresh, with a long finish that turns mineral and slightly chalky.
