Moscato d'Asti too often gets written off as a sugary afterthought, but from a serious Barbaresco family it's a small Piedmontese pleasure worth taking seriously. Albino Rocca farms nearly 20 hectares in three of Barbaresco's four communes. The family also grows Moscato on its 'Sorì' (south-facing) slopes in San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, near Alba. The vines face south-east through south-west on marl that is mostly limestone with some sand, and they were planted at different times between the 1950s and 2012. The ground is too steep and rough for machines, so all the work is done by hand, and very little is made. The family describes the wine as sweet, aromatic and frizzante (gently fizzy rather than fully sparkling), with real fullness. It's the kind of bottle that turns a bowl of summer peaches into an occasion.
