Ebner-Ebenauer Gruner Veltliner Poysdorf 2024

This is the everyday Grüner Veltliner from one of the Weinviertel's most serious biodynamic families, and the easiest way into what Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer do. It is the estate's only Veltliner drawn from more than one vineyard (every other one they make is a single-site wine). The fruit comes from Poysdorf's warm loess, and the Ebner-Ebenauers credit that soil for Grüner's peppery, finely mineral side. Manfred's family has made wine for fourteen generations. The label itself only dates to 2007. Marion left home at 16 to train under Fritz Wieninger. Manfred puts the house approach plainly: nature writes the script, and he just sits in the director's chair. That's exactly what you want from a bottle you'll open on a Tuesday.

"The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Black Edition is a blend of Hermannschachern, Bürsting and Steinberg, fermented in used 500-liter and 225-liter barrels. A 200-liter portion is skin fermented in amphora; part is whole-bunch fermented and part is crushed and receives skin contact. Everything is fermented in barrel without sedimentation. The nose is shy. The palate is immediately concentrated, straight-laced and wiry, with real sinew and wonderful presence that carries a nutty, rounded echo of oak, though verve, concentration and contour remain in the foreground. This has a rounded, even international feel and puts Grüner on a different footing." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Poysdorf offers a clear, fresh and elegant nose of ripe seed fruits such as pears intermingled with vegetal but also flinty terroir nuances. Still with CO2 after the recent bottling, this is a medium- to full-bodied, round, juicy and persistently aromatic Veltliner with fine, savory acidity and delicate bitters. 12% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in June 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Expressive notes of white flowers and potpourri mingle with stony mineral, melon and nectarine flavors in this harmonious, medium-bodied white. Tangy acidity pumps through, and the fresh finish is dusted in fleur de sel. Solid. Drink now through 2029."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Wiener schnitzel with potato-cucumber salad; pan-fried trout with brown butter; Liptauer (spiced curd-cheese spread) on dark bread; asparagus or green-bean salads with a sharp vinaigrette; baked chicken with root vegetables.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Weinviertel Grüner profile: green apple, citrus and the grape's signature white pepper, with a fine mineral edge from Poysdorf's loess. Typically light to medium-bodied with bright, refreshing acidity, it finishes dry, crisp and gently spicy. Think of it as a zippier, more peppery alternative to Pinot Grigio.
