J. Vignier Champagne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut Ora Alba NV ['13 Base]

$6699
Use code 10OFF to get 10% off 12+ bottles
A Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from a family grower, built on the 2013 harvest, so this nonvintage bottle has more years behind it than most you'll find on the shelf. The Vignier family's Grand Cru vines are in the villages of Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, with a few more parcels down in the Côte de Sézanne. Nathalie Vignier now runs the estate, and she came to it from an unusual direction. She worked as an insurance adjuster for wineries in Burgundy and Champagne until her father called her home to take over. Since then she has been steering things her own way: riper fruit, oak back in the cellar, and no herbicides or pesticides in vineyards that are Certified Sustainable. If you think Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs has to come from a big-house label, start here. You get the same Grand Cru fruit from a family that farms it themselves.

More about

Natalie Vignier is the 10th generation of her family to make wine from grand cru parcels in Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, the literal heart of the most famous Chardonnay terroirs — not exactly "out of the way".

She wanted to push the farming towards organics but her parents were, at first, quite resistant. So Natalie, along with her husband Hubert Soreau (of Le Clos l’Abbé) and their close friend Sebastian Nickel decided to begin implementing their progressive viticultural vision on a couple of small parcels down in the Côte de Sézanne. Here, they could do as they pleased, without the pressure and attention that comes with working historically famous grand crus.

They experimented with cover crops, gentler plowing, and holistic vine treatments. And the results were almost immediate. The vineyards are bursting with life, and the fruit they produce transforms into wines of real cut and drive. Today, Natalie uses organic techniques throughout the family’s holdings but it was in the Sézanne where she battle tested her theories.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters with mignonette, warm gougères, sole meunière, a buttered lobster roll, or aged Comté with a few toasted hazelnuts.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs profile: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with brioche and toasted-nut notes from time on the lees. Typically fine-beaded and chalky with bright, racy acidity, and the house's preference for riper fruit should add a little more generosity mid-palate. It finishes dry, long and gently saline.
