"The 2022 Bourgogne Côte d'Or, which comes from various appellations, has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry and redcurrant scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, quite juicy with a slightly granular finish. Give this a year in bottle." —Neal Martin

More about

Pascal Marchand came to Burgundy from Montreal in 1983 and worked harvest for Francois Germain. In 1984 he worked harvest for Bruno Clair. Bruno said he had never seen anyone work so hard and invited Pascal to live with his family and enroll in the Lycée Viticole. Pascal saw that pesticide, herbicide and chemical fertilizers were killing the soils in Burgundy. In 1983, he started at Comte Armand in Pommard and was an early adopter of biodynamics. Benjamin Leroux was his assistant.

At this time, Pascal met all the young vignerons taking over their family domaines like Christophe Roumier, Etienne Grivot, Etienne de Montille and Dominique Lafon. Michel Lafarge taught him how to interpret a vintage and adapt his winemaking. Henri Jayer encouraged him to take risks to achieve greatness.

In 1989 he founded Domaine de la Vougeraie for Boisset. He was the first "flying winemaker" and made wine for Boisset on every continent except Antarctica. After the 2005 vintage, he started his own micro négociant in Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 2011, Pascal started a partnership with banker Morey Tawse of Toronto. Marchand Tawse has grown year after year, purchasing Domaine Maume in 2012.

I met Pascal in 1985 when he was just starting at Comte Armand. I love the wines he makes and he has made a lot of them. They have a purity of fruit and real presence. Like Fred Mugnier, he has a light touch in the cellar and lets the fruit reflect the vineyards they come from.
