Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 2021

Marcenasco is the Barolo that has stood for Ratti since the very first vintage in 1965, and 2021 suits it: yields were down, and the winemaker calls the wines structured, concentrated and built to age. This is the classic La Morra side of Barolo. The house calls Marcenasco smooth, balanced and elegant, and that comes partly from the ground: all of Ratti's vineyards sit on younger Tortonian soils, which give less austere tannins than Barolo's sterner corners. The 2021 comes from three estate vineyards in La Morra at 300 to 400 meters, with vines around 30 years old. The name goes back a long way. Alba's medieval records show Nebbiolo growing in a zone called "Marcenascum" as early as the 12th century, and Renato Ratti's first Barolo vineyard was a small parcel there, just below the Abbey of the Annunciation. He also designed the label in 1965, with the local noble family's black hawk on a gold background. Given what the vintage delivered, this is a bottle to put away for a while. If you open it young, give it time in a decanter.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2021 Barolo Marcenasco is gorgeous. It offers a captivating mix of La Morra finesse and structure, a pretty appealing combination in my book. Macerated cherry, leather, rose petal, incense and orange peel lend shades of exoticism throughout. This is such a gorgeous edition of the Marcenasco." —Antonio Galloni

"Macerated cherry and raspberry fruit is shaded by orange peel, iron and menthol flavors in this juicy red. Needs time to absorb the chewy tannins, with a mix of savory and fruity elements on the finish. Shows fine balance and length."

"Fragrant and refined, the stunning 2021 Marcenasco offers aromas of violet, red berry, dark exotic spice, hints of French oak and menthol. The savory palate features ripe raspberry, cranberry, star anise and vanilla before a salty close. Firm, velvety tannins give the finish grip while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and bright. Drink 2031–2036." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Ratti

The wines of Renato Ratti encompass a perfect combination of the ancient traditions of The Langhe and the more recent accomplishments of the modern era. Renato was born in Piedmont and his family has deep roots in the area, but they were not wine producers. After he graduated from the university in Alba with a degree in oenology he went to Brazil to work for the Cinzano spirits company in Sao Paulo.

Upon returning to Piedmont in 1965 he purchased his first vineyard in Barolo and over the next few years he and his nephew Massimo Martinelli developed the winemaking techniques that helped to modernize the production of Barolo. These include controlling the temperature during fermentation and reducing the amount of time the juice is macerated on the skins.

However they continued to use large, mostly neutral oak barrels for the aging process and at the same time Renato was key in helping to identify the distinct terroirs and microclimates that delineate all the different vineyard crus in Barolo. When Renato died sadly and unexpectedly in 1988 his son Pietro took over and continued the traditions his father had begun.

Indeed, during the ‘90’s when the infamous “modern vs. traditional” Barolo wars were happening, Pietro continued to make their wines like Renato, right down the middle of the stylistic preferences. This continues to this day and is now perfectly in line with the prevailing attitude in Barolo of respecting tradition without losing sight of innovation.

Both Renato and Pietro have been tireless promoters of the Langhe region and its winemaking history. They helped to establish the Albeisa Consorzio to promote the traditional bottle shape as a standard. They created the first maps of the MGA, or cru vineyard parcels in the Langhe. Pietro was until recently the president of the Langhe Wine Consorzio. The contributions to the success of Barolo and Piedmontese wines on the global scale is immense.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Spit-roasted lamb or a grilled rib-eye, braised wild boar or hare, brasato al Barolo, tajarin with a meat ragù, and aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic La Morra take on Barolo: red cherry, violet and dried flowers over notes of licorice, tobacco and tar. Typically full yet elegant, with Nebbiolo's bright acidity and firm but polished tannins, finishing long and savoury. Think the perfume of a fine Pinot Noir with far more grip; a style built to age, best decanted when young.
