For centuries the French regarded the Coulée de Serrant as the greatest site for white wine production in all the world. It was the Montrachet of old, so prized that it was served in the courts of kings, queens, and emperors.
What went wrong? World wars and depressions never help. Uneven winemaking contributed. And a world-wide obsession with Chardonnay led those kings and queens in other directions.
But the terroir is the same as it has always been. Since 2006, Nicolas Joly's daughter, Virginie, has been adding something to the winemaking that may have been lacking since the last time a woman ran the domaine (her grandmother): precision!
The quality of the wines leapt. Finally, the wine made from grapes grown in one of the world's greatest terroirs and farmed with the full care and attention that you would expect from an evangelical practitioner of biodynamics (full credit to Nicolas Joly where it is due!), was back to its great potential.
