This is a Champagne producer that dates back to at least the 18th century (though they’ve probably been tending vines since the 1500s), a producer with long-established parcels in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, and the 1er cru village of Ecueil, a name you might remember from last week’s Savart writeup.
Nicolas Maillart currently helms the estate; he’s been in this role since graduating from enology school in the early 2000s. Like many Champenois of his generation, Nicolas believed his family’s land and vines could produce something special. Rather than selling off fruit or juice in bulk to the big guys, his goal was (and is) to express all of Champagne’s incredible terroir in his wines.
And considering the prime real estate he’s got to work with, there is a lot of terroir to transmit! Pinot Noir thrives in the Montagne de Reims’ chalky soils, producing supple wines with intense red fruit flavors, savory notes of brioche and herbs, and distinctive minerality.
