Born into a very old winemaking family (does the name “Martinelli” sound familiar?), Darek Trowbridge grew up in the vines scattered across the Russian River Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology, he struck his own path farming and consulting on biodynamic viticulture. When it came to making his own wines, Derek chose to use only pre-industrial practices, adding nothing except for a small amount of sulfur. One of the original natural winemakers in California — back before “natural” was even a term in the wine lexicon.
To make wines in this method requires excellent material, so Darek sources fruit for his Old World Winery from 100+ year old vineyards that he brought back to health by applying biodynamic farming practices. Each vine is lovingly tended to produce fruit of exceptional quality. This quality in turn produces wines that are terroir driven and complex, but highly approachable. Rich, fresh fruit and floral notes are layered over an earthy rustic core.
