Slovakian sommelier turned Czech-natural-wine-maven, Petra's story follows a similar narrative to our other favorite new vigneronne of the year: Pauline Passot of Domaine de la Grosse Pierre in Beaujolais. But while Pauline has a contingent of female compatriots to offer support, and a famous wine region as a blueprint, Petra has neither.
When she was asked,”Which lady do you think is the biggest personality in the domestic [Czech] world of wine?” Her answer was “From the domestic [Czech] world of wine, I know only the wives of winemakers.”
What she lacks in counsel, she makes up for in tenacity and an uncompromising commitment to organic farming and natural winemaking of exceptional quality. And while communism may have set the region back 50 years, Southern Moravia was once a viticultural crown jewel of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Petra’s wines harken back to this forgotten time — but with tractors, and a female winemaker at the helm.
