Rebholz is at once one of Germany's most modern and traditional estates. 30 years before Kermit Lynch's Gang of Four made their splash, eschewing chemicals in the vineyard and winery, Eduard Rebholz was touting his wines as "natural", making them forerunners of today's modern natural wine movement.
In his own words he described his wines as such: "You will receive only natural wine from my cellar, wine that is the result of intense and loving cultivation of the vines and of similar vinicultural methods (no chaptalization, no artificial addition of a Süßreserve or similar fundamental structural changes that alter the native character of the wine and, in my eyes, mean that it is no longer a natural product."
Today his grandchildren and great grandchildren carry along the same torch. The twins have staged at Roulot & Magnien in Burgundy and Chacra, the Patagonian project of Piero Incisa della Rocchetta and Roulot, responsible for that country's greatest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. These experiences have only heightened the attention to detail as well as the quality of the Burgundian varietals grown at the estate, alongside Riesling and several others.
The devotion to vineyards mostly clearly express each site. Limestone is prevalent throughout their holdings, along with sandstone and rusty-red sandstone, each imparting their own signature to the wines. These are gorgeous wines, ageworthy and worth taking the time to explore.
