A Premier Cru Volnay with more than twenty years behind it, from a family that has always believed great Burgundy is worth waiting for. Santenots is one of the southernmost sites in Volnay and the one closest to Meursault, lying mid-slope at 240 meters and facing southeast. Its clay-limestone soil is visibly redder than the neighbours', which means more clay and more iron, and wines with more structure (exactly the build that rewards patience). Three generations of Ampeaus have farmed it: Michel Ampeau's grandfather bought the first Santenots vines in the early 1900s, and his father Robert added more in the 1950s. Robert was famous for releasing his vintages long after his peers did, and Michel still holds back selected lots, with Santenots going as far back as 1976. The house style is old-school Côte de Beaune. Grapes are mostly destemmed, fermented in cement with native yeast, then raised in barrel with only a modest share of new oak. Robert, who died in 2004, preferred to work twice as hard with his old high-clearance tractor.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, coq au vin, braised rabbit with wild mushrooms, mushroom and thyme risotto, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the firmer side of Volnay: red cherry and raspberry fruit with earthy, savoury notes and a hint of spice from barrels with only a little new oak. Santenots typically has more grip than most Volnay, with fine but present tannins and fresh acidity. With long bottle age, look for forest floor, dried violets and a long, dry finish.
