Joseph-Jibril Cabernet Franc Black Ridge Vineyard 2023

Three wines in one bottle: Joseph-Jibril split this Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Franc into three one-ton ferments (one destemmed, one whole cluster, one carbonic), then pressed them together. That's a lot of extra work for 250 cases, and it pays off in a Cab Franc with depth and lift at once. The fruit comes from a block at the top of Black Ridge Vineyard, planted in 1999 and farmed organically by Bill Brosseau and his team. Each lot spent about 18 days on its skins, then aged in neutral puncheons and neutral French barrels. With no new oak, the fruit stays front and center, and the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. At 13.3% alcohol, this is California Cabernet Franc built for freshness rather than heft. Think classic Bordeaux-style dark fruit with a lighter step. The house is just two winemakers (the label joins their middle names) who met at Kosta Browne and do everything themselves, from vineyard to cellar to marketing. "Real wine for real people" is their motto, and this bottle lives up to it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary; seared duck breast with a cherry pan sauce; roast pork loin with fennel and black pepper; mushroom and lentil ragout; steak frites.

Tasting Profile

Medium ruby in the glass. On the nose: blackberry, black currant, raspberry, hibiscus and a touch of pepper. The fruit is classic Bordeaux-style but fresher. On the palate you get cherry and hibiscus, and bright acidity balances the wine's power.
