If you want to know why the Saar is so exciting right now, start here: Barrel X is Florian Lauer's Platonic ideal of a Saar Riesling, the estate's answer to a Bourgogne Blanc. The name is a bit of an in-joke. Lauer traditionally matches each wine to a barrel, and Barrel X doesn't have one. The 2025 blends fruit from four Saar villages: Ayl and Wawern bring power, Saarburg brings racy acidity and Wiltingen brings spice. It's feinherb, meaning just off-dry, with a touch of sweetness balanced by ripe fruit and acidity. That style helped redefine the Saar after the very sweet Rieslings of the 1990s and early 2000s. Florian, the fifth generation, farms organically and ferments with native yeast. 2025 was a generous vintage, but Lauer's wines came out more direct, lighter and more linear than expected, which suits a bottle built for easy drinking. You get serious Saar pedigree (the estate sits around the corner from Egon Müller) without the serious price tag.

More about Peter Lauer

The Saar is our kind of region: cold and mineral-rich but with sun that makes Rieslings as succulent as they are perfectly seasoned with salt and racy acidity.

Peter Lauer makes some of our very favorite Saar wines. It's a bit hard to pin down exactly how Peter Lauer fits into today's Riesling zeitgeist. He's best known for his forward-leaning dry wines.

But he's not just a trippy natural grower. He's a neighbor of the great Egon Müller, and while their wines are oceans apart they share so many affinities, starting with a love for German tradition, terroir-specificity, and brilliance in Riesling. The Lauer wines are often described as drier, which is true as far as it goes; but even his driest wines have fruit and their own sort of decadence. They certainly have the Saar purity we love.

Probably, we just have to accept that there are multiple ways to express the greatness of the Saar.
