Paltrinieri Solco Lambrusco dell Emilia 2024

Solco is the odd one out in Paltrinieri's lineup. Every other bottling from this Sorbara benchmark is pure Lambrusco di Sorbara, but Solco is 100% Salamino, the grape that makes a darker, fruitier Lambrusco. Alberto Paltrinieri's own tagline for it is "Oh!...Finally a real Lambrusco!" That tells you who he made it for: people who want Lambrusco to taste like Lambrusco. The grapes come from the 'Cristo' di Sorbara cru, on the narrowest strip of land between the Secchia and Panaro rivers in the province of Modena, where the vines grow in loose, fresh soil. After the wine macerates on the skins, its second fermentation happens in tank (the Martinotti method), which keeps the fruit up front. It's frizzante, which is lighter than fully sparkling, and medium-dry: there's just enough sweetness to meet Emilia's cured meats and rich pasta halfway. If your memory of Lambrusco is the sugary stuff, this is a good way to change your mind, and it's easy to open on a weeknight.

"The 2024 Lambrusco dell'Emilia Solco displays a deep purple-ruby hue. It opens with a bouquet of sweet cream, raspberry and spice. This is wickedly fresh and perfumed with tantalizing acidity and tart wild berry fruit notes. Long and intense, the 2024 closes with violet and lavender inner florals." —Eric Guido

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tagliatelle al ragù; pumpkin tortelli with butter and sage; tigelle filled with prosciutto, mortadella and coppa; sour-cherry crostata for dessert.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Salamino profile: a deep purple, frothy frizzante with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and violets. Light-to-medium bodied, it typically balances a gentle touch of sweetness with bright acidity and soft, slightly grippy tannins, finishing juicy and refreshing. Think a gently fizzy Beaujolais with more colour and a bit more grip.
