The Boxler family has grown grapes in the Alsatian village of Niedermorschwihr since 1673, when they emigrated from Switzerland. It was Albert Boxler, moving back to France in 1946 (after spending time as a trapper in Montana), who decided that the family would produce wines under their own name rather than sell off their harvests. Ever since, they have made wine in an unchanging style that even their grandparents would have recognized. No small producer in Alsace epitomizes high-quality and traditional winemaking like Boxler.

The family's holdings are in the best granite-rich terroirs of Alsace, including the imposing Sommerbeg and Brand Grand Crus. Sommerberg sits just out the back door of the family winery and is the cooler of the two sites, producing long-lived, linear, and direct wines. The imposing Brand Grand Cru is in the neighboring village of Turkheim, an ultra-steep site that receives a bit more sunshine. The wines show more power and depth, balanced by gorgeous tension, freshness and detail. Both sites require time to truly reveal their potential.

Boxler is widely considered one of the top producers in Alsace, although this small, meticulously run estate is often overshadowed by its larger, more famous neighbors (Trimbach, Humbrecht etc.). But that suits current winemaker/proprietor Jean Boxler just fine.

Jean has been running the domaine since 1996. His grandfather, Albert was the first to bottle and sell the wines commercially, starting just after WWII. And with the help of famed importers Robert Chadderdon and now Kermit Lynch his wines have been featured on the lists of America's top restaurants for 2 decades now.

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"The 2023 Riesling Dudenstein Sommerberg Grand Cru is from a more complex parcel where granite is mixed with limestone and sandstone. This was made from vines planted in 1946 and 1953. A shy nose hints at zesty citrus. The palate is distinctly juicy, delving into green-yellow Reine Claude plum, emanating coolness and sporting a touch of pear peel on its texture. Yet it is absolutely concentrated, with a finish reminiscent of eau-de-vie and Mirabelle."" -Anne Krebiehl, MW
