Clos du Chapeau is the easiest way into Domaine de l'Arlot: a Pinot Noir monopole, so no one else bottles it, sold under the modest Côte de Nuits Villages appellation. The 1.6-hectare plot sits on clay and limestone in Comblanchien, just south of Prémeaux and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The village is known for very chalky ground, the vines here are more than 50 years old, and the plot is shaped like a hat, which is where the name comes from. The Clos has been part of the domaine since 1891, when wine merchant Jules Belin bought the property and enlarged it with Clos du Chapeau and Clos des Forêts Saint-Georges. The estate has farmed organically since 2000, with AB certification since 2014, and began biodynamic farming in 2003. Géraldine Godot has run the technical side since 2014 and keeps extraction to a minimum. For 2023 the grapes were fully destemmed, fermented on native yeasts in stainless steel and then given 11 months in French barrels, 30% of them new. The summer was rainy and unsettled until the sun returned in mid-August, and the grapes kept surprising acidity right up to a harvest under clear skies from 6 to 12 September. Godot says this one wins you over with its accessibility, and the domaine says it's good young while the fruit is fresh but can improve for up to about ten years.

"The 2023 Côte de Nuits Village Clos du Chapeau has a pleasant red cherry and crushed strawberry bouquet that has more purity than the Hautes-Côtes. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh with crisp red fruit and a keen line of acidity. It remains lively through the nicely poised finish. This is worth seeking out for early-term drinking." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine de l'Arlot

For several decades now the Domaine de L'Arlot has been following its own path to creating wines that reflect both the subtleties of diverse terroirs and a distinct "house style" that is unique in Burgundy. The Domaine is located in Premeaux, on the southernmost edge of the Cotes-de-Nuits where Nuits-St-Georges tends to resemble Chambolle in elegance and perfume.

In 2015 the very talented Geraldine Godot was given full control of the domaine. She is committed to continuing the traditions of the house including biodynamic farming and a high percentage of whole clusters during fermentation. However she is making small changes, using less extraction and less new oak to achieve even more balance and grace.

The heart of the Domaine's holdings are two 1er Cru monopoles in Nuits-Saints-Georges: Clos de L'Arlot and Clos des Forets. These vineyards produce some of the most elegant wines in Nuits and are perfect examples of the finesse and purity of terroir that L'Arlot achieves.

They also have small parcels of vines in two of the top vineyards in Vosne-Romanée: Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Suchots. These blue chip wines are complimented by a range of excellent values from the Haut-Cotes and other sites surrounding Nuits.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Jambon persillé or Lyon saucisson to start; then fattened chicken with ceps, guinea fowl with shallots, or grilled veal kidney.

Tasting Profile

A pure, fresh nose of blackcurrant, red cherry and strawberry. The palate is juicy, energetic and crisp, with bright acidity. It's a light-bodied red, but the fruit feels dense and fleshy for its weight. Expressive and easy to like right now.
