Les Suchots is the Vosne-Romanée premier cru wedged between three Grand Crus, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Echézeaux and Richebourg, and the domaine points out that a number of respected experts rank it among the very finest premiers crus in the village. L'Arlot's vines are among the best placed in it. They sit across from Romanée-Saint-Vivant and just below Richebourg, and they're more than 50 years old. Jules Belin's heirs handed the estate to AXA Millésimes in 1987, and AXA later added this parcel along with a plot of Romanée-Saint-Vivant itself. The house style goes back to Jean-Pierre de Smet's motto, "the more one knows, the less one interferes." The farming is certified organic and biodynamic in practice. For 2023 the grapes were destemmed, fermented on native yeasts and aged 15 months in 228-litre barrels (40% new), then given two more months in stainless steel. The domaine describes 2023 as a year that never sat still: a cool spring with temperatures going up and down, then a rainy, unsettled summer until mid-August, when sun and heat finished the ripening and the grapes held on to a surprising amount of acidity. You're getting Grand Cru neighbours at premier cru status, and that's the case for this bottle.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the vivacious red cherry/crushed strawberry fruit and just a touch of incense. Very poised, the palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. It is slightly ferrous toward the finish that lingers nicely. This is not a powerful Vosne-Romanée, but it will drink well for 12 to 15 years. Very fine." —Neal Martin

"Magnificent intensity of fruit – as if the essence of Alpine strawberries at their very, very sweetest. Sweet mint-and-tarragon fragrant herbs. Thrilling and mouth-watering. Clementines and blood orange and then a little swirl of smokiness. Stunning. Hard to spit."

More about Domaine de l'Arlot

For several decades now the Domaine de L'Arlot has been following its own path to creating wines that reflect both the subtleties of diverse terroirs and a distinct "house style" that is unique in Burgundy. The Domaine is located in Premeaux, on the southernmost edge of the Cotes-de-Nuits where Nuits-St-Georges tends to resemble Chambolle in elegance and perfume.

In 2015 the very talented Geraldine Godot was given full control of the domaine. She is committed to continuing the traditions of the house including biodynamic farming and a high percentage of whole clusters during fermentation. However she is making small changes, using less extraction and less new oak to achieve even more balance and grace.

The heart of the Domaine's holdings are two 1er Cru monopoles in Nuits-Saints-Georges: Clos de L'Arlot and Clos des Forets. These vineyards produce some of the most elegant wines in Nuits and are perfect examples of the finesse and purity of terroir that L'Arlot achieves.

They also have small parcels of vines in two of the top vineyards in Vosne-Romanée: Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Suchots. These blue chip wines are complimented by a range of excellent values from the Haut-Cotes and other sites surrounding Nuits.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry sauce, beef fillet with a wild mushroom sauce, roast squab or pheasant, or wild mushroom risotto with a little truffle.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Vosne-Romanée profile: floral aromatics with raspberry, morello cherry and blackcurrant, framed by gentle spice from partly new oak. Typically medium-bodied and silky, with fine, ripe tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and perfumed. Built to age, it tends to move toward liquorice, undergrowth and leather with time in bottle.
