Birgit can best be described as a serious free spirit. That's also an apt description of her wines. From a collection of biodynamically farmed vineyards that are teeming with biodiversity, along with a group of dedicated women, she gently coaxes out the complex flavors that her exceptional terroir can deliver. Farming is 100% Biodynamic and only serves to increase this transparency.
Birgit’s vines (and 280 year-old cellar) are in Göttlesbrunn, the center of the Carnuntum wine region. This appellation, named after the Roman city that was located only a few kilometres from present day Göttlesbrunn, is rapidly getting recognized for its top notch terroir. The soil is predominantly limestone/clay, not too dissimilar to Burgundy from a geological standpoint.
Work in the cellar is minimal. Pigeage is done by foot and no new barrels were harmed in the process of making these wines. All wines see some skin contact ranging from 18 hours for the white and 23 days for the Blaufrankisch. The wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered and with zero additions.
Brigit's wines have become exceedingly popular amongst the natural wine drinking set -- for obvious reasons, if you've read this far and know how she works. But while Birgit may be a natural wine darling, her wines have just as much to offer those who drink a bit more traditionally: sure they're natural -- but they're just plain old fashioned good wine! And they should be on the radar and in the glasses of all those who love honest, focused, terroir driven wines.
