Cascina Penna-Currado Barbera d'Alba Superiore Carra 2023

$5999

This cuvée comes from the sun-soaked Carrà vineyard in Monforte d'Alba, where old vines planted in 1965 merge with younger parcels in naturally biodiverse terrain. Seven days of cold maceration and whole-cluster fermentation in traditional botti create concentrated fruit without overripeness—plums and blueberries with spicy character. The altitude and direct Alps exposure keep acidity vibrant, making this simultaneously modern and classically structured.

"Tasted from cask, the 2023 Barbera d’Alba Carrà is hugely promising. It’s one of my favorite wines in this range so far. Deep and explosive, the 2023 offers a captivating mix of dark fruit, along with a host of complicating floral, savory and mineral overtones. It’s a very serious wine in the making. That’s not terribly surprising, given how captivating the Barberas were at Vietti during the Currados’ tenure." —Antonio Galloni

More about Cascina Penna-Currado

Cascina Penna-Currado is the project of Luca Currado Vietti and Elena Penna, formerly of Piedmont powerhouse Vietti. Luca made the wine — some of the best, most highly-regarded Piemontese wines of the past 20 years — while Elena handled sales and hospitality.

The family sold the estate to an American businessman in 2016, but Luca and Elena stayed on to make wine. The couple's 2023 departure rocked the wine world. In the intervening years, they’ve acquired prime parcels in Serralunga, at the top of the cru of Lazzarito.

They farm 20 hectares of vines, planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and the rare white grape Timorasso.

These two winemakers, joined by their children Giulia and Michele, have Piedmont in their veins. Their skills are undeniable, having been tested for decades in the construct of their work at Vietti. This extremely personal project, now allows them new avenues through which to express their passion for the vine and for Piedmont’s rich history.
