Domaine Bachey-Legros Chassagne-Montrachet 2023

Village Chassagne-Montrachet from a family whose base is Santenay, not Chassagne — which is exactly why it's worth your attention, since the Bachey-Legros name doesn't carry the Chassagne premium even when the wine is drawn from several vineyards in the commune. Six generations of the family have farmed here, with Christiane's sons Samuel and Lenaic Legros running things now across 18 hectares of Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet and Les Maranges. Their stated philosophy is to let each vine live, fruit and die as naturally as possible — respect for the plant, for nature, and for the work of the generations before them. Farming is traditional and hands-on, without chemical treatments, and the elevage happens in barrels of varying ages. This is the straight village bottling, no premier cru on the label and no premier cru theatrics: white Burgundy with a real address, from people who've been working it a very long time.

More about Domaine Bachey-Legros

Bachey-Legros is located on the oldest street in the picturesque little village of Santenay-les-Haut. The neighborhood looks much the same as it did 200 or 300 years ago. Indeed much of what they are about is decidedly “old.”

The family of Bachey-Legros has been farming in and around Santenay for 6 generations, going back to the 19th century, and they are most proud of their old vines, most of which were planted between 1935 and 1955. They farm these vines fastidiously, using traditional techniques and eschewing chemical treatments. They employ a similar old-school approach in the cellar, with gentle extractions and elevage in top notch barrels of varying ages.

Yes, “old” is definitely an apt word here, except when you are talking about the current generation of proprietors Samuel and Lénaic. These brothers are definitely bringing fresh ideas to the operation while continuing the long traditions of their family.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with tarragon, sole meuniere, scallops seared in butter, a gratin of leeks and Comte, or a plate of oysters and brown bread.

Tasting Profile

Dry white Chardonnay. Orchard fruit — pear and apple — with white flowers and a touch of hazelnut. Medium-bodied, with bright acidity keeping it fresh and a clean, stony finish rather than a buttery one.
